During a recent trip to Washington, DC I had the opportunity to visit The Phillips Collection. Housed in the renovated and expanded old Phillips home near Dupont Circle, the collection consists largely of 20th century art.
It was Mr. Phillips’ arrangement of late 1950’s Mark Rothko paintings into a single room, an exhibition approach that Rothko himself advocated during his lifetime, that drew me to the collection. I’ve read a lot about this installation over the past few years and it was satisfying to finally see it.
I plan on sharing some of my other favorites from the Phillips Collection in a future post.
