When I began Composition 276 I had a few objectives. First, I had a strong idea to develop for the color palette. Then, since I felt the last piece had been a bit too ambitious for my level of experience with a new workflow, I decided to take a more practical compositional approach.
Because the idea was so strong and clear for the colors, that component pretty much took care of itself through photo selection. For the compositional structure, I decided to pull back from attempting a dramatic statement, as I had in Composition 275, and keep the grid simple and right angular.
The result was interesting. By reducing the desire to be expressive, Composition 276 moved closer to the formal and austere aesthetic that made the grid idea so emotionally attractive to begin with.
I am calling the grid inspired Walking Wave Series compositions the “Mosaic Sequence.”
